The Make-Up Girl is out now!

My second novel, The Make-Up Girl is published today. It tells the story of Faith Wishart, who invents a boyfriend and a swanky PR job to impress her recently widowed mum. Faith is a make-up girl for a cosmetics company who makes up every aspect of her life in order to meet her mum's very high standards.

I had a lot of fun writing about a compulsive liar, so hopefully it's fun to read. It's been chosen as one of Cosmo's books of the month and Heat call it 'a funny and sweet summer read'. It's also got its very own movie agent, so maybe one day Faith will make it onto the big screen. Anyway, hope you all enjoy it. You can read the first chapter here, buy it from Amazon here, or if you're feeling lucky try and win it here.

My boyfriend, the Labrador

My boyfriend Matt Haig has his first novel coming out this week. It's called The Last Family in England and it tells the story of a family which gets torn apart by unfaithful grown-ups and dysfunctional teenagers. The difference is, the story is told by their pet black Labrador, Prince.

When Matt told me he was going to write a novel entirely narrated by a Labrador, I thought it was one of the worst ideas he'd ever had (and trust me, he's had quite a few).

Anyway, stubborn as he is, my big thumbs-down was all the incentive he needed and six months later he handed me the finished manuscript for his Labrador-narrated opus, The Last Family in England.

As I sat down and read it, the main thought I had going through my head was 'DAMN! IT'S BLOODY GOOD!'. Don't get me wrong, I want Matt to do well. It's just that when two writers are in a relationship, jealousy and intense rivalry are almost inevitable. By the end of the novel I had laughed and cried so much that I'd completely forgotten it was Matt writing it all.

And, sure enough, he got a good agent and a good publisher and now he's getting loads of fantastic reviews, and he's had meetings with film people and it looks like it's destined to be a great big success.

Having got over my initial professional jealousy, I now realise my best tactic is to back him one hundred percent in the hope we can one day afford a big posh villa in the South of France or something.

And anyway, it is definitely the funniest and saddest book you'll read this year. And it's not just me who thinks so. His mum thinks so too. No seriously, lots of people think so - check out his website for some of the latest reviews (www.matthaig.com).

Right, I'll go now and try and beat him at his own game. He might have created Lab Lit but I'm going to start writing proper, authentic chick-lit . . . with real fluffy chickens.
